Meaning of colors: menu path, keyboard shortcut
Used graphic application:
Adobe Photoshop 7.0
When moving the cursor above the image on the left - the image before the processing appears.
This effect is obtained starting with a black and white picture.
If your picture is colourful - turn it into black and white. If you don't know how to do it - here is the short tutorial: Black and white picture from colorful one.
1. Open the Photoshop program.
2. Open the photo purposed to apply the sepia effect.
Choose from main menu: File » Open or press Ctrl + O keys
...or by double clicking the left mouse button on the dark grey application background.

3. We'll be processing this image in CMYK mode. Now it is probably RGB mode set (the information about edition mode can be see in the blue bar above the photo - in parenthesis).
To get to the CMYK edition mode - choose from the program menu:
Image » Mode » CMYK Color.
4. We'll obtain the sepia effect by modifying curves adjustments. For that purpose choose from the program menu:
Image » Adjustments » Curves or press Ctrl + M keys.
The following window appears:

In that window choose the Cyan component from the drop-down Channel menu.
Grab the centre of that line with the mouse and bend it in the lower right corner direction.
That's how we remove the blue colour from the picture. Do it with the Magenta and Yellow components too, but bending their lines in the upper left corner direction, so adding more red and yellow. That's how it should look:

Instead of dragging lines with the mouse you can change values in the Input and Output fields in the window at left. It is conveniently to click one of them and roll the mouse wheel up and down - values will be changing smoothly and you can observe the effects on the picture immadietely.
When the result is satisfactory - click OK.
The end.
